COMMISSION FOR JUSTICE

MISSION STATEMENT

As stated in the mission section of our Constitutions: "Together and as individuals, we pledge ourselves to the pursuit of justice by making our own the teachings of the Church and by developing a heightened social consciousness. We engage in the work for justice in the spirit of unity and reconciliation."

The Commission for Justice of the Sisters of Saint Joseph affirms that justice is a constitutive element of the Gospel message. Responding to the dynamic movement of the spirit as it manifests itself in the Congregation's current Chapter documents, the Commission is called to challenge injustices and foster right relationships. Embracing its prophetic voice, the Commission is committed to standing with marginalized persons and living the ecological principles of a global spirituality.

ROLE DESCRIPTION OF COMMISSION FOR JUSTICE

The Commission for Justice is a group of Sisters of Saint Joseph, appointed by the General Council, to be a resource on social justice issues. The Commission works to engage the total Congregation in issues that are relevant to our charism and mission. Through social analysis and other tools, this group acts as a convener, catalyst and connector, with the goal of integrating justice into all aspects of our life and impacting our world.

Catholic Social Teaching (CST)

"Far too many Catholics are not familiar with the basic content of Catholic social teaching. More fundamentally, many Catholics do not adequately understand that the social teaching of the Church is an essential part of Catholic faith. This poses a serious challenge for all Catholics, since it weakens our capacity to be a Church that is true to the demands of the Gospel. We need to do more to share the social mission and message of our Church."(Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions, USCCB - United States Conference of Catholic Bishops)

Some Key Principles of Catholic Social Teaching:

1.  Dignity of the Human Person
2.  The Common Good
3.  Preferential Option for Those Who Are Poor and Vulnerable
4.  The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
5.  Global Solidarity
6.  Subsidiarity
7.  Care for Creation
