Sister Marlene Smittle

Sister Marlene Smittle, formerly known as Sister Joseph Virginia, died at Saint Joseph Villa on July 24, 2019. Her Mass of Christian Burial followed on July 29.

Marlene was the only child of Charles and Mary Virginia Smittle, reared and educated in St. Martin of Tours Parish in Philadelphia. She enjoyed high school years at St. Hubert High School, and one year after graduation entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

Sister Marlene taught students in grades five through eight for more than twenty-five years in schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the dioceses of Trenton and Paterson.

In the late 1980’s, Sister Marlene accepted a position in the Activities Office at Archbishop Ryan High School in Philadelphia. Always a diligent worker, she enjoyed her ministry in high school. Later, she went on to the Studies Office at St. Hubert’s High School, also in Philadelphia.

Sister’s final years in active ministry included the role of Unit Secretary at Saint Joseph Villa and Assistant Sacristan at the Villa, before being assigned to the ministry of Prayer and Presence.

Sister Marlene’s generous, faithful presence will be missed.  In her own words, “Just remember me as one of God’s children.”
