Mission Haiti Project Overview

Soon after the earthquake hit Haiti in January of 2010, Sister Griselda Martinez Morales, CSJ the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) representative for the Federation of the Congregations of Saint Joseph sent a request to various sisters involved in justice work in the global Joseph family asking how we might respond to the tragedy in Haiti. The justice coordinators in the US and Canadian Federations expressed interest in this request and over the last two years have collaborated in designing a response.

Sisters of Saint Joseph have ministered in Haiti in education, health care and pastoral care for many years. We contacted some of those sisters and other organizations that have been very active in Haiti to determine what might be the best way get aid to the people in the most effective way.

As a result of extensive research we decided to collaborate with a non-profit organization called Mission Haiti, Inc., based in a Minneapolis, MN parish where a Sister of Saint Joseph is on staff. This group has been very active with Annunciation School, a grade school in Léogâne (about 20 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince) and Rose de Lima Secondary School also in  Léogâne which was completely destroyed in the earthquake. These two schools are administered and staffed by a religious congregation of native Haitian women, the Sisters of the Company of Jesus. The temporary classroom facilities of Rose de Lima Secondary School Sisters from the U.S. and Canadian Federations submitted a grant proposal to our respective leadership and it was accepted by both.

Rebuilding Haiti through the Empowerment of Girls is a projected 10-year commitment to Mission Haiti, Inc., that will provide education for 10 Haitian girls from primary through secondary school; three (3) years of technical education for 10 girls; assist in the salaries for and certification of teachers; and provide partial financial assistance for building Rose de Lima Secondary School.

Donations for this effort are gladly accepted.

Please make checks payable to the U.S. Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph and write “Mission Haiti Project” on the memo line of the check.
