Sister St. Gregory McCorkle

Sister St. Gregory McCorkle died at Saint Joseph Villa on August 2, 2020. Sister’s funeral Mass and burial followed on Friday, August 7, 2020.

The fifth child of Marguerite and Joseph McCorkle, the young Mary Grace spent her elementary school days at Our Lady of Victory Parish in West Philadelphia. Sister recalled vividly her teachers from those days. The family moved to Holy Cross Parish in Delaware County, and Mary Grace attended West Catholic High School.

Always interested in Sisters of Saint Joseph during her formative years, even though her aunt was a Franciscan Sister, Mary Grace chose to enter  the Sisters of Saint Joseph, who inspired her throughout  her school years.

Sister St. Gregory taught in the elementary grades in Philadelphia and Baltimore archdioceses and in the diocese of Harrisburg.  After a long teaching career, Sister learned to work as a Nurse’s Aide, and began her ministry at Saint Joseph Villa. She was instrumental in opening an Adult Day Care Center there at that time.

She became Director of Adult Day Care at Immaculate Heart of Mary Home in Philadelphia before moving to the Archdiocese of Newark to become Coordinator of Resource Center for Clergy, Religious and Ministerial Laity. Later, well experienced in her work, she moved on to the Allentown area as pastoral minister at St. Catherine’s Parish.

Sister St. Gregory loved being a Sister of Saint Joseph and even volunteered to help in Stella Maris Convent before becoming a resident at the Villa in 2005. She was an inspiration to the Sisters at the Villa due to her long involvement with the elderly.  A favorite mantra of hers, taught to her by Mother Marie Estella, was “Jesus, Jesus, be unto me a Jesus.”
